How to install an eSIM on iPhone (and what changes after iOS 26)
Four ways to install, ranked by how often they actually work. Plus what iOS 26 did to the activation flow.
Every iPhone from XS onwards has an embedded eSIM. Every model sold in the US since 14 is eSIM-only. Here's how installation actually goes in 2026:
1. Scan a QR code (most reliable)
- Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan
- Tap Use QR Code
- Point at the QR your provider sent
- Confirm
This is the path that works on every carrier and every region.
2. Activation code (when the QR is on the same screen)
Same Settings path, but tap Enter Details Manually instead. Type the SM-DP+ address and activation code the provider sent. Useful when the QR is on the same screen you're reading from.
3. Direct from the carrier's app
Some providers (Airalo, Holafly, Ubigi) trigger installation from inside their app via a deep link. Works when it works; falls back to QR otherwise.
4. eSIM Carrier Activation (only US carriers)
Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile can preinstall via your IMEI. Pointless for travel eSIMs.
Common stuck states
- "Could not add cellular plan" — usually means the profile was already consumed by a different device. Most providers issue a fresh QR if you contact support.
- "No service" after install — make sure data is enabled on the new line and roaming is on for travel eSIMs.
- "Network selection: failed" — wait 90 seconds, then go to Settings → Cellular → eSIM name → Network Selection → Automatic.
After iOS 26
The big change is the eSIM transfer flow — iOS 26 added cross-account transfers, so swapping an eSIM from your old iPhone to a friend's spare is now a 30-second tap dance. Travel eSIMs still don't transfer (one device, one profile), but moving your home line is finally easy.
If your phone is too old or you want more flexibility
If you're on an iPhone X or older, or just don't want to be limited to the one embedded eSIM slot, a physical 9eSIM card pops into the SIM tray. You write profiles to it the same way, but you can store up to 50 and swap between them via the SIM toolkit menu without re-installing anything.
